Black Benzoin is a balsamic resin that is derived from the bark of trees in the genus Styrax and is farmed sustainably on Northern Sumatra. Black Benzoin, or Jurur is used in incense manufacture and perfumery. When heated on a incense heater the resin melts into a beautiful garnet pool of beautiful candy like resin. Black Benzoin resin presents with sweet notes of vanilla and has a sweet confectionery character.
This resin can be used on charcoal or in an incense heater. It blends well when compounded with other resins such as myrrh, labdanum, frankincense and rose for example, as well as, other natural aromatics to create one’s own incense or oil blends. Black benzoin will grind quite nicely. Although the wonder of this resin may not be apparent to the eye, the olfactory qualities of Black Benzoin will reveal themselves when held to the nose. Jurur is often thought of as a low grade benzoin,and perhaps if you are distilling essential oils this may be the case but for the incense user or maker this benzoin will bring a wonderful vanillic aroma for a fraction of the price of the Maha kasar.
